Gadd’s retelling of his real-life encounters with a stalker through the fictional Donny Dunn in “Baby Reindeer” is also a story of trauma and healing. (From left) Richard Gadd as Donny and Jessica Gunning as Martha in "Baby Reindeer." Ed Miller/NetflixGunning plays Donny’s stalker Martha, a troubled woman who claims to be a lawyer but is more than anything a career creeper and repeat offender. By the end of the journey, it’s clear that “Baby Reindeer” was made with purpose, something that often escapes projects that earn their popularity on the merit of being about incidents so messy (and sometimes horrifying) that you can’t look a way. “Baby Reindeer” might be is a sign that true crime TV is finally growing up.

A co-founder of telecommunications company Crown Castle has nominated a rival slate of directors to the firm's board, muddying the waters months after activist investor Elliott Management and Crown Castle signed a cooperation agreement. Crown Castle said in a statement rejecting the slate that the Boots Capital nominees "do not possess the relevant expertise and experience." Elliott rebuffed Boots Capital's entreaties, the people said, which they described as seeking investment or access to investors. Miller had been trying to raise money for a special-purpose vehicle to launch an activist fight at Crown Castle prior to Elliott's November launch and had been in conversation with Crown Castle since at least August, the people said. Representatives for Boots Capital did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

These deals help banks meet capital requirements more efficiently, allowing them to keep lucrative businesses that would otherwise become unprofitable. Investors in these deals include lightly-regulated entities like hedge funds, shifting risk to the shadow banking sector. Credit risk transfer is another tool for them to pursue after the Fed’s clarification on what is allowed, said Cory Wishengrad, head of fixed income at Guggenheim Securities. That means Merchants sold the riskiest tranche of the loan portfolio, maximizing the capital relief it could get on it. Whether U.S. regulators will allow such insurance deals to qualify for capital relief is still untested, Staudinger said.

Lengeling told Doty it "felt like we got punched in the gut, quite frankly" when he recently learned prosecutors were asking that Miller spend a year in prison for the penny stock scheme. In addition to his prison term, which Miller is expected to start serving in August, Doty sentenced Miller to two years of supervised release after he completes his time locked up. Miller and Jaberian, as well as an unidentified person related to Miller, became the nominal CEOs and presidents of the targeted companies, prosecutors say. Miller voluntarily dropped a suit related to efforts to take over New World Gold soon after CNBC reported his involvement with that company. Doty sentenced him on May 10 to two years of probation.

That realization led portfolio manager David Miller to launch the Catalyst Insider Buying Fund (INSIX) nearly 12 years ago. While many funds factor in insider transactions when selecting stocks, few use it as their main prerequisite when screening investments. But in the last 12 months, it's the best-performing large-cap fund on the market through April 30, according to Kiplinger. All of these companies have benefitted from insider buying to some extent, but some have been lifted even more by company buybacks. "They've just been gobbling up their own stock," Miller said of O'Reilly Automotive.
